It’s Okay to Prioritize Yourself Too

Dear Mom,
I hope this message finds you well. I’ve been thinking about how much you do for everyone, and it struck me how often you put your own needs aside to help others. Your kindness is truly a gift, but it’s also important to remember that you deserve care and attention just as much as anyone else.
Please, take a moment before you say ‘yes’ to another request to ask yourself a few important questions:
- Do you have the time to offer, or will this stretch you too thin?
- Are there other commitments that need your focus right now?
- Have you already committed to something else that is important to you?
- Will helping leave you with enough energy for yourself?
If any hesitation arises from these questions, it’s more than okay to choose yourself and politely decline. It’s not selfish to honor your own boundaries; it’s a way of showing yourself the love and respect you so freely give to others.
You’ve always been there for everyone, sometimes even at the cost of your own well-being. But your needs are important, too. It’s okay to listen to what you need and say ‘no’ when you have to. Taking care of yourself isn’t neglecting others—it’s ensuring you’re at your best so you can give the quality of care and love you’re known for, without feeling overwhelmed.
With all my love and support,
Dena
